The town of Loreto, located on a hill and surrounded by the green countryside of the Marche region, owes its fame to the sanctuary which hosts and preserves the Holy House of the Virgin Mary; a sacred place, called by Pope John Paul II the "true Marian heart of Christianity". The sanctuary has been there for centuries and is still one of the most important pilgrimage of the Catholic world, only 5 minutes away from our bed and breakfast.
The heart of the city is the main square. The car can be parked outside the town walls, accessed from Corso Boccalini from Via Sisto V or from Porta Marina. Adorned with a seventeenth-century fountain, the square is bordered to the east by the imposing Basilica: the building, between the late Gothic and the Renaissance, requires careful examination. Inside, just below the spectacular dome, sits the Holy House where Mary received the Annunciation by the angel.
Protected externally by a marble designed by Bramante, it houses the Black Madonna. It is also advisable not miss the Museum and Gallery, which contains eight paintings by Lorenzo Lotto, a large collection of pottery and various memorabilia. The museum is housed in the Apostolic Palace, the building that borders Piazza della Madonna from north - west.
The city tour can be continued with a walk among the shops of Corso Boccalini. Also, Piazzale Loreto and the view from Piazza Giovanni XXIII deserve a visit.
